When a baby is born we want to celebrate. It is such a miracle and a moment of joy.
One way of celebrating the arrival of a baby is to have a special service in church together with family and friends to thank God for your child. As part of the Church of England, St Peter’s would be delighted to baptise your child at a Baptism Service or to hold a Service of Thanksgiving.
Thanksgiving Service
A Thanksgiving Service is an opportunity for everyone to come together to thank God for the child, prayers are said, the child is named and blessed, a Bible is given and sponsors or godparents are usually involved. This is a way of openly celebrating a new addition to the family in church, and together we ask for God’s support, help and blessing.
Baptism Service
A Baptism Service involves baptising your child with water. It is the start of an amazing journey of faith for your child and a special day for all your friends and family. The baptism recognises that your child is precious to you and precious to God, and so in this service the parents and godparents are asked some important questions. They are asked to commit to actively supporting the child in their journey of faith over the coming years by praying for them, reading the Bible to them and showing them practically how to make good choices in life.
At St Peter’s…
Please do get in touch to discuss which service would feel the most suited to you. We encourage those families who would like their child to be baptised to attend one of our services and also attend a baptism course so that together we can explore those big statements that you will be committing to in the service and be able to support you with resources as you start this life long journey of faith.
