St Peter’s Churchwarden Mervyn Silva will be running the Manchester marathon to raise funds for Cancer Research on 14th April 2024.
The cause is especially close to his heart, as cancer has affected so many lives including those who
are near and dear to us.
Mervyn will be running the marathon inspired by his fellow Saltaire Strider running club member and running mate for 8 years, Nick Breare (on the right of the photo, with Mervyn). Nick battledh head and neck cancer for the past 3 years, involving treatment at three Yorkshire hospitals. Sadly, Nick died on March 6 and Mervyn will be running in his memory.
‘Despite a terminal diagnosis, Nick has been a pillar of support and strength, and his resilience has inspired me to take this action,’ Mervyn said.
‘It is my first ever marathon and may even be my last one! know the road ahead is tough, but I believe that with people’s generosity, we can create a ripple of hope for those facing similar battles. By supporting this cause you’re not just sponsoring a run; you’re investing in life-saving research, supporting families, and bringing hope to those who need it most. Together, we can change this, with your support, they can fund research that will help prevent cancer, detect it earlier, and improve treatment options. Every pound donated brings us one step closer to a future where cancer is no longer a threat to our loved ones.’
